What is the Capital Campaign?: The Bringing New Life to Buffalo capital campaign is more than just a fundraising initiative. More accurately, the campaign reflects the Buffalo Zoo’s conservation vision, passion for wildlife and, most importantly, its commitment to turn the nation’s third oldest Zoo into a cultural gem inside the Queen City.
The last major renovation of the Zoo occurred in the 1930s. In recent decades, animal management and display techniques have revolutionized the way animals live in zoos. In response to the need for major renovations, the Buffalo Zoological Society Board, under the vision and guidance of Zoo president, Dr. Donna Fernandes, developed a $75 million 15-year master plan. This plan has been adopted to completely transform the way both humans and animals experience the Zoo. To that end, in 2002, the Buffalo Zoo hired renowned architect, Patrick Janikowski, designer of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and interpretive planners from Main Street Design to develop the 23-acre site.
The master plan envisions facilities that will:
- Use the importance of water as a thematic focus, tying together exhibits and narrative to create a cohesive learning experience for visitors
- Offer new engaging walk-through exhibits
- Provide enriched naturalistic habitats for more animals
- Preserve and adaptively reuse historic structures
- Feature new indoor habitats to promote winter attendance
- Help sustain scientific research and breeding programs
- Maximize education programs
- Provide high-quality visitor amenities.
